At School we will be working on practicing the skills of Listening, Following Instructions, Sharing and Social Skills. The children will become familiar with statements such as; “show me what listening looks like” and they will learn to follow oral directions immediately after they are given. These directions can be repeated once if necessary.
Although, all of the children will make progress in learning verbal clues, some will need a more defined system to help them make appropriate choices. A “time-out” will be given to a child when he/she chooses to ignore oral directions given by an adult, when he/she is not being “nice” to another student and for other disruptive behavior.
When a child receives a “time-out” he/she is removed from their present activity and must put their head down on the table. A timer is set for five minutes (or one minute times the child’s age). When the timer goes off, the child has a short conversation with the teacher concerning the behavior and is then allowed to return to the class activity.
To keep you informed on your child’s behavior at school, I will be using “Time-Out” cards. If your child receives a “time-out” at school, he/she will bring home a card which describes the problem. This card should be signed and returned to school.
When your child has followed all our classroom rules throughout their day of school, he/she will bring home a “Shining Star” award. Therefore after each school day, look for a note concerning your child’s behavior at school.
Attached to this letter is an example of a “Time-Out” card and a “Shining Star” award. If you have any questions concerning your child’s progress at school, please feel free to contact me.
